HA!

The world breaks everyone and afterward many are stronger at the broken places.
-ernest hemingway

i heard this in a movie tonight. i like it. we all get broken at some point in life. some of us will be broken many times. i do always hope to be stronger in the broken places because then i know the breaking accomplished it's purpose. being stronger means being more dependent on the One whose strength is seen unadulterated in my weakness.

Kristen's Birthday

delicious angel good cake made by her roommate, Alicia-YUM.
LOVE LOVE LOVE her.
ha-kristen and her cake :)

nicole's visit!

nicole came down for the weekend-she and james have been on a summer visit and we got to spend a day with her! what a treat. the bummer is that i can't find my camera so i have no pictures. ack. but here's what we did: she got here saturday afternoon and we grabbed lunch at the market downtown, then went shopping for several hours :) then to see Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.
(there's a little story behind that one--the summer before our senior year of college, nicole, laura and i spent a month back packing from London to Rome. we had the time of our lives. by the end of the trip though, we were exhausted and ready to come home. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (1) was showing on the plane ride back from Rome and let's be honest, it's a cheesy teenage movie but we were so physically and emotionally exhausted that we all ended up BAWLING through the whole thing-ha! so for us to go see the 2nd one together was only logical :D--rather anitclimactic story, i know...but now it makes more sense.)
this morning we went to church-it was excellent-and the headed to the mariner's game (i got some lucky tickets from work!)...it has been pouring all day, (there's nothing i love so much as the fresh smell of rain, the sound of it falling to the earth, and knowing that it's making the emerald city more emerald)-so we were all glad that the Mariner's stadium has a roof on it. we won the game, which is saying a lot for the Mariner's this season, and had a great time just catching up with Nicole. i miss her already!

Family Wall of Fame

one area of interior design that is most overwhelming to me is hanging artwork. the huge wall space can be so intimidating because there are SO MANY OPTIONS...how does one pick??!! well, i finally (a year after moving in) have figured out one part of my wall. i like to call it the 'family wall of fame'-enjoy!

kevin and christina
notice the changing sunset in the pictures that follow. one thing i love about this stadium is that you can see the city in the background.
it was pretty rad!

NFC West champions for the last 4 years (what's the Canadian flag doing there???)
can you believe this sunset?!

friends and football fans!
it's kinda blurry but it went into overtime and we won against the Chicago Bears 29 to 26 :D
crazy beautiful stadium/sunset

Salem Weekend

just got back from salem, OR. this is my 3rd time to OR in the last 4 weeks.
i love oregon and i love the open road.
2 of the last three weekends were weddings of dear friends. i love weddings. this weekend was Josiah's big day. i think it was beautiful but i don't totally know because it took me 7.5 hours to get down there.
kristen and i left at noon knowing we would for sure beat traffic and counting on the fact that we could check into the hotel to clean up before festivities started.
on the way down we encountered 3 kinds of fires that delayed out arrival time BY 3 HOURS: bus fire, brush fire, car fire. just south of Seattle we drove by a bus that had just blown a tire out and was fully aflame; windows were popping out as we drove by 3 lanes over and both the smoke and heat were unbelievable. fortunately, things cleared up again after people stopped gawking and nobody was in the bus-phew.
but about 30 miles north of the OR/WA border we hit totally standstill traffic. now, we're in a car with no A/C and it's about 90 degrees out. we kept trying to stay right next to the semi's because they provided some shade-i cannot even begin to tell you how overheated and disgustingly sticky we felt. yuck.
after a frantic call to Callie to see if she would figure out what's going on and being frustrated that after 5 hours in the car we weren't even to Vancouver, WA, we found out that a HUGE brushfire had hopped over the highway and caught a car on fire in the process. YIKES. after 25 miles of crawling, we finally got going again only to get caught in rush hour traffic all the way through and out of portland. awesome.
we finally make it to salem at 7:30 (wedding started at 7pm) and randomly were able to find the wedding location (we had only directions to our hotel and then from the hotel to the wedding venue...not directly to the wedding location)...we changed in the car hoping that nobody would walk by and snuck into the back of the service. we saw the unity candle and the kiss and then it was over.-ha....meanwhile we were so sticky and gross and windblown---and because it was like 95 degrees...we couldn't stop sweating. thank God for perfume.

what a mess. so after the wedding we ran back out to the car to put on make up and fix our hair before the reception (which really didn't a monumental amount to how we felt but hopefully helped how we looked :D). i was just glad we got to see part of the ceremony because this was one of my best friends in college but because of the extenuating circumstances, there are no pictures. sorry.

our hotel was actually awesome and the california king bed was beyond amazing :D

Pig Roast

i have never in my life been to a pig roast...until last night. it was awesome. my friend Brian and his house hosted close to 100 of us for this occasion. here is the master carver who spent 2.5 hours dissecting this thing. YUCK.
ewwww....
the pit...it was 5.5ft deep!
banana leaves and burlap sacks
playing a game i don't know the name of. kristen and i made up the rules :D
this was right as i was saying 'blast!' because i just lost the game that i made up the rules for...

Danny's Wedding

this weekend, i got the chance to watch one of my best friends from college, get married to his highschool sweetheart! these two are so well matched and have an amazing story. it was absolutely beautiful. maren and i got to town a bit early and stumbled onto the pre-wedding photo shoot--we thought we were being incognito behind the bushes but later we found out that they totally saw us-HA!
being sneaky (yeah right...)

they're SO HAPPY and beautiful!!!

LATVIA!

in case you didn't catch it, the Latvian beach volleyball duo of Plavins and Somoilovs, ranked 23rd out of 24 teams AND the youngest team present, kicked USA's #1 ranked team in the butt the first round of play--YEAH BABY! i'm so proud of the homeland right now...

please, please, please....

...read this book! i can't even begin to tell you how rich this is...you will not regret it; it's likely that it will challenge your thinking and even quite possibly change your life...
if you don't know much about Henri Nouwen, he was a Dutch Catholic priest who taught at Notre Dame, Yale and Harvard before spending the remaining years of his life as the pastor in a community of disabled people in Toronto, Canada. he authored more than 40 books in his lifetime...his work is highly regarded by Protestant and Catholic clergy alike-definitely one of the most significant theologians of his time and beyond.

Window Poems #7-Wendell Berry

Outside the window
is a roofed wooden tray
he fills with seeds for the birds.
They make a sort of dance
as they descend and light
and fly off at a slant
across the strictly divided
black sash. At first
they came fearfully, worried
by the man's movements
inside the room. They watched
his eyes, and flew
when he looked. Now they expect
no harm from him
and forget he's there.
They come into his vision,
unafraid. He keeps
a certain distance and quietness
in tribute to them.
That they ignore him
he takes in tribute to himself.
But they stay cautious
of each other, half afraid, unwilling
to be too close. They snatch
what they can carry and fly
into the trees. They flirt out
with tail or beak and waste
more sometimes than they eat.
And the man, knowing
the price of seed,wishes
they would take more care.
But they understand only
what is free, and he
can give only as they
will take. Thus they have
enlightened him. He buys
the seed, to make it free.

* i love the last section talking about the birds knowing only that the seed is free; although, the man providing it knows the cost. Yet because of the need it fills and the joy it brings, it's worth the cost to him. i see a reflection of Christ in that.*

"Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is, in the boredom and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness; touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis, all moments are key moments and life itself is grace."
*Frederick Buechner*
